Rules & Conduct

Guidelines for success:
  • Always try
  • Be responsible
  • Cooperate with others
  • Do your personal best
  • Treat other people and property with respect

Cell Phones

Technology is a wonderful tool and has made communication much faster; however, it can cause a variety of distractions for students during the school day.

It is the policy of Fairview to disallow cell phones or any other personal communication devices from 7:00 a.m. to 2:05 p.m.:

  • Parents may reach students in an emergency by calling the school.
  • Students may also place phone calls between classes or at lunch in the office.
  • Students having a device visible and/or which causes a disruption during school, will have it confiscated and it will ONLY be returned to the parent.

Parental support of these policies is appreciated.

Electronic Devices

The use of electronic devices, such as , MP3s, iPods, cameras, handheld games, DVD players, etc. are not permitted at Fairview, due to the disruption they cause.

These personal items are expensive and can be misplaced, lost, or stolen. We encourage students to keep these items at home.

A student who has such a device visible at school will have that item confiscated, and it will ONLY be returned to parent or guardian. Repeated incidents will be considered defiance.

Drugs, Alcohol or Tobacco

It is illegal to possess, use or being under the influence of:

  • Any drugs
  • Tobacco or alcohol

Students involved with this face a long-term suspension, potential loss of credit and police action.

Dress Code

Students are expected to dress in a modest and respectful manner. Clothing should in no way distract from or disrupt the learning process (District policy 3224 (pdf)).

Student attire and grooming must be worn that permits the student to participate in learning without posing a risk of substantial disruption of or material interference with school activities or to the health or safety of any student or school district personnel.

  • Clothing must appropriately cover the groin and buttocks areas and breasts with opaque fabric, except that cleavage alone will not constitute a dress code violation.
  • Clothing must cover undergarments, except that visible straps on undergarments worn under clothing are permitted.
  • Clothing must be suitable for all scheduled classroom activities, including physical education, science labs, shop classes, and other activities where unique hazards or specialized attire or safety gear is required.
  • Clothing that is worn must not cause a material or substantial disruption of the educational process or have caused such disruption in the past.

For the purpose of this policy, a material or substantial disruption of the educational process will be found to exist when clothing causes a material or substantial disruption of the educational process, or contains or depicts:

  • Violent language or images.
  • Images, innuendo, or language depicting drugs, tobacco or alcohol-related messages (or any illegal item or activity).
  • Hate speech, profanity, sexual innuendo, or pornography.
  • Symbols or language that creates a hostile or intimidating environment based on any protected class or affects the attendance of another student.

Students may wear items in the following non-exhaustive list, so long as these items do not cause a material or substantial disruption of the educational process, as outlined above:

  • Hats at high schools and when authorized by the applicable K-8 school.
  • Religious headwear
  • Hoodie sweatshirts at high schools and when authorized by the applicable K-8 school, so long as the face is visible to school staff
  • Fitted pants, including opaque leggings, yoga pants and ”skinny jeans”
  • Pajamas on school days specifically authorized by school administrators
  • Ripped jeans, so long as underwear or the groin or buttocks areas are not exposed
  • Tank tops, including spaghetti straps
  • Athletic jerseys

Weapons Policy

Any student who brings a firearm, dangerous weapon, or explosive devices to school or a school-sponsored event will automatically be expelled from school for a period of not less than one year.

When a student is expelled, he or she may not attend any other State of Washington public school. This will occur regardless of the intention for possession of the firearm, regardless of whether the firearm is loaded.

It is absolutely critical that parents take responsibility for all firearms kept in the home and see that their children understand the seriousness of guns at school.

A weapon may include mace, pepper spray, knives (including pocket knives), look-alike weapon, such as a play gun, and other items that can be used as weapons, such as nunchucks, screwdrivers or hair picks
