ATTENDANCE
Good Attendance for Success!

Every Minute Counts!

You may notice an increased emphasis at Fairview Middle School on student attendance. It's a pretty simple idea, when students have good attendance, they do better in school. Good attendance is missing not more than 1 day of school a month, whether excused or unexcused. And the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) defines chronic absence as missing 18 school days a year – or two days a month.

It's no surprise that, at all levels of school, research shows attendance can impact student success.

Family, school and community partnerships play an essential role in supporting students. We're increasing our efforts to support families and celebrate good attendance. If a student's attendance is starting to get off track we'll make phone calls, send letters and meet with parents. And when students have good attendance we'll recognize their efforts, because Every Minute in School Counts!

Good Attendance is ATTENDANCE PROCEDURES: If your student is absent, please call our Attendance Secretary at 662-2630. Leaving a message at this number will excuse an absence. You may also send a note with your child when they return to school. Our automated system will call student’s homes on the evening of each day a student is absent from a class unless you have called or sent a note to excuse the absence.

EXCUSED ABSENCES:
All absences due to illness will be considered excused, as well as absences due to family emergencies. Other absences may be excused following a confidential discussion with an administrator.
UNEXCUSED ABSENCES/TARDIES: Oversleeping, missing the bus, transportation problems, clothing problems, and babysitting siblings are not excused. Family trips and other absences, not due to illness, must be excused by a parent and an administrator. All absences not cleared within 48 hours will be converted to a cut absence and appropriate disciplinary consequences will be assigned. TRUANCY: Any unexcused absence will be considered truancy after 48 hours and will be subject to discipline. For safety reasons, students are not allowed to leave campus without parent approval and office notification. EXTENDED PLANNED ABSENCE: Students should bring in a note from parents to the Attendance Secretary, a minimum of one week, prior to the dates of a planned absence. The student will receive a form from the Attendance Secretary, which needs to be given to teachers and then approved by the principal. CLASSROOM TARDIES:  Unexcused tardies, between classes, will result in the following discipline: · 3 Tardies: Lunch Detention · 6 Tardies: 1Hr. After School Detention · 9 Tardies: 2Hr. Thursday School · 12 Tardies: Half Day ISS · 15 Tardies: Full Day ISS **Tardies reset back to 0 after each quarter
